Norman – The OU College Republicans held a Tea Party on Monday to protest against the excessive taxes and outrageous spending being proposed and enacted by the Obama administration and Congress.

Tessa and patriots at the Tea Party

Over 100 people attended, representing both students and members of the community. Speakers included Congresswoman Mary Fallin, State Representative Scott Martin, Brandon Dutcher of the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs, and Labor Commissioner candidate Jason Reese. Former State Representative Thad Balkman served as the MC.

“It was a great event, and I’m glad we had it,” said OUCR Vice Chairman Stephen Nehrenz. “Over 100 people braved the cold and rain to voice their opposition to the ridiculous spending and to raise awareness of how this will affect students for years to come.”

Two days later, many College Republicans participated in the nationwide Tea Party protests held on April 15. CRs from OU attended the Norman Tea Party and the main Tea Party at the State Capitol.

About 5,000 people were at the State Capitol Tea Party. OFCR Chairman Emeritus Daniel Swanson said, “It was exciting to be part of such a large crowd of Americans making their voice heard.” He added, “People are fed up with the tax and spend policies Congress has embraced, and want real change, not higher taxes.”

Visit our videos page to see highlights from the Tea Party and media coverage of the event.

By Reese Nixon, OFCR Communications Director

October 3, 2008

Surprised. Excited. Anxious. These were emotions felt by many College Republicans across the state, when John McCain announced his running mate for 2008 Presidential Election. To say the least, the possibility that Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska was a candidate for Vice President was unpredicted, but it was a strategic selection for the McCain campaign.

GOP Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin

Kristin Meese, a senior accounting major at Tulsa University and TU College Republicans Treasurer, stated, “What I have heard from her, I like. I think she is what McCain needs. She is pretty fiery, but I think she will be a great asset to McCain’s team, and I feel really good about this election!”

Many students agree, such as OU sophomore meteorology major Tim Marquis. He said, “I was really happy when I found out. I think it was a good move to pick someone with a little bit more youth. She’s a woman who has done a really good job as governor of Alaska. She’s tackled corruption in Alaska and is really up and coming. The pick really qualms fears about McCain being so old and that Republicans are insensitive. I’m really happy!”

Others, such as Stephen Nehrenz, another OU sophomore meteorology major, were a little unsure of the selection at first. “My initial reaction was a little bit of shock, to be honest. She definitely isn’t who I thought he was going to pick, but, saying that, I think she’s brought a great amount to the table for McCain, she really seems to have energized many people in the GOP with her fresh face.”

But really, who is Sarah Palin? We know she has battled corruption in our nation’s largest state, helped create a budget surplus for Alaska’s economy, moose hunts, married her high school sweetheart, and is a lipstick-wearing hockey mom. As for the rest: time will tell as we enter the last thirty grueling days of the election.

We’re one month away!

One month from now, Oklahomans will be going to the voting booth and casting their ballots. In one month, our state has the opportunity to do something it has never done before!

This November Oklahoma has the real chance of finally having a Republican-controlled legislature. Not only that, but Oklahoma will vote to send Jim Inhofe back to Washington to keep fighting for Oklahoma values.

It won’t happen without your help. It won’t happen without grassroots activism leading the way, and that’s where we come in. College Republicans have historically been at the frontlines of campaigns, volunteering to make things happen. We put in our time and effort to ensure conservative values win on Election Day.

I would like to encourage each and every one of you to get involved and join a campaign. The time to act is now so don’t wait!
